Safety & Security Officer
We want you!
The Safety & Security Officer is the on-the-ground enforcement presence across Skanem Africa's production facility, logistics yard, and surrounding perimeter. The role enforces security searches, safety SOPs and site rules in real time — on the floor, at the gates, in the yard, and on patrol both inside and outside the building. The Officer supervises traffic movement during peak hours, enforces pedestrian walkway use, witnesses dispatches and waste destruction events, and documents and escalates all deviations without delay. The role works in close coordination with the Security Control Room and reports directly to the Security Manager.
Responsibilities
Security Searches:
• Conduct mandatory physical searches of all persons exiting the production floor, dispatch bay, and premises — no exceptions.
• Search all bags, lunchboxes and personal items at designated search points during shift.
• Conduct vehicle searches on all incoming and outgoing vehicles — verify contents against documentation.
• Ensure dual-officer search protocol is observed at all times; never conduct searches alone where avoidable.
• Document all search activities in the Search Register; escalate any refusal or suspicious finding to the Control Room immediately.
Walkway Enforcement & Safety Compliance:
• Enforce strict use of designated pedestrian walkways across the plant at all times — challenge and redirect any person found walking in vehicle lanes or restricted zones.
• Inspect all walkways at the start of each shift and during every patrol — ensure no materials, equipment, pallets, trolleys or waste are blocking the designated path.
• Ensure all emergency exits are clear, unobstructed and fully operational at all times — no storage, no parking, no propping open without authorisation.
• Identify, document and immediately escalate any tampering with emergency exits, fire extinguishers, alarm pull stations, safety signage, fire hose reels or any safety-critical equipment.
• Flag and report any production floor process violation — deviations from SOPs, unsafe working practices, unauthorised area access, or equipment misuse.
• Ensure PPE compliance (hairnets, safety boots, high-visibility gear) is enforced at all production entry points.
• Enforce no-mobile-phone zones and restricted access areas throughout the facility.
• Record all safety and process violations in the Occurrence Book immediately; escalate repeat offenders to the Security Manager for referral to People & Culture.
Traffic Supervision:
• Supervise all vehicle and pedestrian traffic movement during peak hours — morning arrival, shift change, dispatch windows and close of day.
• Control access at the vehicle entry/exit gate during high-traffic periods; maintain safe, orderly flow.
• Ensure all vehicles are logged in the Vehicle Movement Register before entry and upon exit.
• Prevent unauthorised vehicle access — confirm driver identity and vehicle authorisation before allowing entry.
• Manage congestion at the dispatch bay and loading areas — enforce loading sequence and bay allocation.
Patrol — Internal & External:
• Conduct scheduled and unannounced patrols within the production floor, finished goods area, dispatch bay, waste area, raw materials store, and all perimeter zones.
• Conduct external patrols of the building perimeter, car park, and surrounding estate boundaries during each shift.
• Inspect perimeter fencing, lighting, and access points during patrol; report any damage or vulnerability immediately.
• Identify and challenge any unauthorised person or suspicious activity encountered during patrol.
• Record all patrols in the Patrol Log — time, route, observations and outcome.
Dispatch & Waste Destruction Oversight:
• Maintain a physical presence at every local and international dispatch event — no dispatch proceeds without the Officer's witness and sign-off.
• Verify dispatch documentation against goods being loaded; escalate any discrepancy to the Security Manager before the vehicle departs.
• Witness all waste destruction events — no waste destruction proceeds without the Officer's presence and countersignature on the destruction form.
• Verify that items presented for destruction match the approved authorisation; report any irregularity immediately.
• Maintain the dispatch and waste destruction registers with full accuracy.
Raw Materials Receiving:
• Be present at the point of entry for all raw materials receiving events.
• Verify incoming materials against the purchase order or delivery note; flag any unexplained excess, shortage or substitution.
• Ensure all incoming vehicles are searched before and after unloading.
• Maintain the receiving compliance log and escalate any breach to the Security Manager.
Documentation, Escalation & Control Room Coordination:
• Document all observations, incidents, deviations and patrol findings in the Occurrence Book in real time — nothing left unrecorded.
• Escalate all security and safety deviations immediately to the Security Control Room — radio communication is primary.
• Work closely with the Security Risk Controller on duty — relay floor intelligence, respond to Control Room instructions, and support real-time incident management.
• Support formal investigations by providing witness accounts, documented observations and physical evidence.
• Report end-of-shift summary to the Security Manager covering all events, deviations and follow-up items.
