Security Systems Engineer (Intern)

We want you!

The Security Systems Engineer (Intern) is responsible for the day-to-day technical governance of Skanem's physical security systems infrastructure. The role manages the CCTV network, access control and biometric system, intrusion alarm, and all related hardware — handling configuration, troubleshooting, fault diagnosis and basic fixes without dependence on external call-out. The Engineer works closely with and actively supports the Security Control Room team, ensuring all systems serve the Control Room's 24/7 operational needs in real time. The Engineer provides in-house technical oversight over the third-party security systems maintenance provider, verifying that all hardware work is completed to standard. The role reports directly to the Security Manager.

Responsibilities

Control Room Technical Support:

• Work closely with the Security Risk Controllers on duty — be the first point of call for any systems issue affecting Control Room operations.

• Ensure all CCTV feeds displayed in the Control Room are live, correctly labelled, and functioning at all times.

• Respond immediately to any systems failure reported by the Control Room — fault resolution takes priority over all other tasks.

• Configure and maintain Control Room workstations, monitors, NVR/DVR access, and alarm panel interfaces.

• Support Controllers during shift handovers to verify all systems are operational before a new shift takes over.

Systems Oversight & Configuration:

• Operate as Access System Administrator Level 1 — configuration, access profile management, system monitoring and report generation.

• Manage system configuration changes for CCTV, access control, intrusion alarm, walk-through and turnstile systems.

• Implement access profile definitions per the approved Access Control User Matrix — only in accordance with dual-authorised instructions.

• No system configuration changes shall be made without prior written approval from the Security Manager.

•Maintain system documentation including configuration records, change logs and version control.

Fault Diagnosis & Troubleshooting:

• Diagnose and resolve technical faults on CCTV cameras, access control readers, biometric devices, alarm panels and network connectivity.

• Handle basic hardware repairs and fixes in-house — reduce dependency on the third-party maintenance provider for minor faults.

• Maintain a fault log — record every reported fault, action taken, parts used and resolution time.

• Escalate faults requiring external hardware intervention with full fault documentation; verify and sign off the service provider's work reports.

• Monitor system uptime and report any downtime to the Security Manager immediately.

Joiners & Leavers — Access Lifecycle:

• Process all new joiner access requests upon receipt of the approved Access Control Management Form signed by the HOD and Security Manager.

• Enrol new staff on the biometric fingerprint system and configure access profiles limited to authorised zones only.

• Deactivate access immediately upon receipt of leaver or suspension notification from HR — same day, no exceptions.

• Retrieve and disable access cards from departing staff; record in the ID Card Destruction Register.

• Process departmental transfer access changes in accordance with the revised HOD authorisation.

• Maintain the Joiners & Leavers Access Notification Register with full accuracy.

CCTV & Recording Management:

• Ensure all 119 CCTV cameras are operational, correctly oriented and recording at all times.

• Monitor storage capacity and ensure footage is retained for the required period.

• Respond to CCTV access requests — footage may only be shared upon written approval from the Security Manager.

• Support investigations by providing specific footage, access logs and event reports in the required format.

• Ensure forensic integrity of all recordings — no footage shall be deleted, edited or overwritten without authorisation.

Asset Register & Inventory:

• Own and maintain the Security Systems Asset Register covering all 119 CCTV cameras, 15 access control doors, turnstile, alarm, walk-through scanner, control room equipment and all peripherals.

• Conduct bi-annual physical asset reconciliation and present findings to the Security Manager.

• Track warranty periods, service dates and replacement schedules for all equipment.

• Manage spare parts inventory — document consumption and trigger replenishment requests.

Third-Party Maintenance Provider Oversight:

• Coordinate with the third-party security systems maintenance provider for all hardware maintenance requirements — scheduled or reactive.

• Be present at all external maintenance visits — verify scope of work, supervise access, and ensure no unauthorised system changes are made.

• Review and sign off each maintenance service report before filing; retain copies for audit.

• Review and sign off each maintenance service report before filing; retain copies for audit.

• Escalate any inadequate or incomplete maintenance work to the Security Manager with documented evidence.

• Ensure all vendor access to security systems is logged, authorised and limited strictly to the agreed scope of work.

Reporting & Documentation:

• Submit a monthly systems status report to the Security Manager covering: uptime, faults, resolutions, maintenance provider performance, Joiners & Leavers processed, and asset register updates.

• Maintain all records in accordance with the Physical Security Access Control Data Retention Policy.

• Support internal audits and compliance reviews with full documentation.
